First elected in 1998, Steve Bizzell has become one of North Carolina's longest-serving elected county sheriffs. A lifelong Johnston County resident, he has dedicated his career to ensuring the safety and well-being of our community.
In 2022, Sheriff Bizzell received 53,665 votes — more than 92 percent of all ballots cast — the highest total ever received by a Johnston County sheriff. This overwhelming support reflects the trust our community places in his leadership.

Served as President representing all 100 county sheriffs statewide.
Became Chairman of the NC Sheriffs' Association Executive Committee (2008–2009 term).
After 12 years in office, crime rates in Johnston County had dropped significantly under his leadership.
Oversaw one of the largest meth lab busts in county history, seizing 70 vessels used for cooking methamphetamine.
Appointed to the state's DWI Task Force and elected to the N.C. Sheriffs' Education & Training Standards Commission.
Received one of North Carolina's highest civilian honors from the Governor in recognition of exceptional service.
Won re-election to a sixth term with over 85% of the vote.
Honored by Smithfield VFW Post 5886 for exemplifying true leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Re-elected with 53,383 votes (over 92%) – the largest vote total ever for a Johnston County sheriff.
Instrumental in the design, construction and, opening of the state-of-the-art 118,000 sq. ft. facility with 469 beds.
Relocated Sheriff's Office to a new modern facility, that includes 911 Communications and Emergency Services.
Led relief effort delivering 16 truckloads of supplies to western NC and help raise $50,000 for Samaritan's Purse.
Acquired new tactical rifles, bullet proof vests, automatic license plate readers, and facial recognition software.
Issued new Glock 9mm pistols with red-dot sights and flashlights. Issued body cameras funded by seized assets, saving taxpayers over $534,000. To safely bring vehicle pursuits to an end, new stop sticks were recently issued.
Narcotics Division received award for dismantling fentanyl ring – seizing 100,000+ pills and making 9 arrests.
